How do I save a baby that is choking and conscious? |
|
Answer:
Let's say your baby is suddenly unable to cough, Your baby may make odd noises, no sound at all while opening her mouth, may grab at their throat, and their skin, or lips, may turn bright red or blue. Immediate implementation of the following can mean the difference between life and death. If you can, have someone call 911. If you are alone, provide two minutes of care before calling. 1. Place the baby face down, at an angle, on your forearm and rest your arm on your thigh to hold the baby steady. Support his or her chin firmly with one hand, making sure that the baby's head and neck are lower than its body. 2. Deliver five quick blows between the shoulder blades using the heel of your hand. 3. If the object does not dislodge, place the baby onto its back. Maintain the same angle as before, with your hand behind the neck and head for support. 4. With two fingers of the other hand, deliver five quick thrusts to the center of the baby's chest, directly to the breastbone. If the baby stars to cough, quit the procedure so that the object can dislodge. 5. Continue to alternate between these two procedures until the object becomes dislodged. These instructions will help you understand how to help a choking baby. it is a good idea, however, to take a certified CPR class through your local Red Cross. This will give you the opportunity to practice the techniques.
