What is a Muscle Spasm?

Answer:
A muscle spasm is an involuntary contraction
of a muscle's motor unit.  Muscle spasms can occur in a group of muscles, or a hollow organ, or an orifice and they usually start at a specific point of aggravation.

These spasms can be accompanied by pain. However, a muscle spasm is usually harmless and go away after a few minutes.

Colic is a form of muscle spasm that usually occurs in the bile duct.  The pain from colic may induce nausea and vomiting.

Some muscle spasms are very minor, like the ones we get in our eye that make us think we are having a stroke.  It usually turns out to be just a muscle spasm.  Some can become sever enough to induce a muscular contraction that is beyond the force that someone could generate by themselves.  In these severe cases it is common for tendons and muscles to become strained or torn.

Some ways to help a muscle spasm are stretching, massage, and acupuncture.  Temporary medications, such as muscle relaxers, can also be effective in getting over muscle spasms.
