What is Bursitis?

Answer:
A person has hundreds of bursa sacks in their
bodies.  The bursa sac is like a Ziploc bag of oil that acts as a slippery surface that decreases friction between the surfaces in our joints.

Bursitis is a condition in which the bursa has become inflamed due to excessive impact or repetitive motion.  In this case, the inflammation and swelling cause the bursa to get pinched inside the joint.  This causes movement to become painful and irritating.

In the area of sports injuries, bursitis usually occurs in the shoulder.  This often coincides with an injury to the shoulder, or a strength imbalance due to too much overhead lifting or bench pressing.  When the rotator cuff is injured or develops tendonitis, the muscles of the rotator become inflamed, leaving less room for the bursa causing it to become pinched and inflamed.  Impingement syndrome in the shoulder joint, a condition in which the space within the shoulder is too small, can also lead to bursitis.
