What is Cervical Cancer?

Answer:
Cervical Cancer is a disease in which malignant
cells grow in the tissue of the cervix, the opening of the uterus.  Cervical cancer is a slow growing cancer that usually shows no symptoms in the early stages.

Because of this, it is important for an OBGYN to do a series of tests to look for the cancer.  These tests, including a Pap smear, can detect the presence of dysplasia, or abnormal cells in the cervix.  If dysplasia is detected, the doctor will normally perform a biopsy of cervical tissue in order to look for cancer.

There are an estimated 11,150 cases each year in the United States of cervical cancer and approximately 3,600 deaths each year.
