What is diabetes?

Answer:
When we eat foods containing sugar, it is broken
down into simple sugars, or glucose, that is circulated in order to be used as fuel.  The pancreas produces insulin in order to help turn the sugars and starches that we eat into energy to be used by the cells.

Diabetes is the condition in which the pancreas does not produce the proper amount of insulin to deal with the amount of glucose in the blood.  As a result, blood sugar levels become too high.

The two major types of diabetes are Type 1 and Type 2.  A patient with Type 1 diabetes is not able to produce insulin at all.  In Type 2, a person is still able to produce insulin, but the cells are unable to utilize it.

Diabetes has become one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States.  It can lead to such long-term complications as heart disease, kidney failure, stroke, amputations, nerve damage, and blindness.
