What is Jaundice?

Answer:
Jaundice is mostly a symptom of something gone
awry in the body.  It is not a disease in itself; it is a yellow discoloration of the skin, whites of the eyes, and other areas, primarily in mucous membranes, caused by excess bilirubin in the bloodstream.

The presence of jaundice symptoms might indicate liver problems like hepatitis or cirrhosis (and others), or it might indicate pancreatic disease, or it might indicate other systemic problems that result in excessive bilirubin being produced.

Jaundice symptoms are typically investigated initially by certain blood and urine tests, to determine liver and other organic functionality.

Sometimes, babies are born with jaundice.  This is usually not harmful, providing it is detected, and is treated immediately with light (or other) therapy.

Always consult with your health professionals for specific and detailed information regarding jaundice or any other medical and health related issues.
