What is LASIK Eye Surgery?

Answer:
LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis) eye surgery
is used to correct farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism (an irregular shaped cornea). It’s one of two types of laser eye surgery, the other being photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

LASIK eye surgery works by reshaping the cornea, the transparent front part of the eye, so that light passing through it is focused onto the retina at the back of the eye. A circle is cut in the cornea almost all the way around the eye, producing a “flap” which is folded back: a laser then makes corrections to the middle part of the cornea. The flap is then put back in position and the eye’s natural suction keeps it in place. Healing takes only a few hours after surgery.
