What is OCD?

OCD, also known as Obsessive-Compulsive
Disorder
, is defined as a medical condition which is characterized by Obsessions (unusual thoughts) and Compulsions (unusual behaviors) performed in order to reduce the anxiety.


The major reason for OCD is thought to be lack of serotonin, a neurotransmitter. The various common types of Obsessions which may occur in an OCD patient are unusual thoughts, fear of dirt or germs, unusual worry about any task, persistent intrusive ideas, unusual sensations, need for constant reassurance, etc.
The various common types of Compulsions which may occur in an OCD patient are repetitive, purposeless, intentionally performed actions like cleaning and grooming again and again, ordering & arranging items, counting over & over again, saving unusual things like old newspaper, mails, etc.

These Obsessions and Compulsions can be severe enough to disturb the daily life activities of an individual so OCD patient must be treated on time. The various treatment methods available are medicines and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy.
 
Diagnosis of OCD can be done only by an experienced Psychologist, or a Psychiatrist, or a Psychoanalyst by asking about various symptoms and lifestyle of the patient. One may contact mental health services, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and physicians.
