What is Skin Cancer?

Answer:
Skin cancer occurs when malignant (cancer) cells
develop in the outer layers of the skin.

There are two main types of skin cancer -- malignant melanoma and non-melanoma cancer. Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous form of cancer and affects more women than men. It can quickly spread to other parts of the body through the lymph system or the blood.

Basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer are the two main types of non-melanoma cancer: basal cell cancer rarely spreads to other parts of the body, while squamous cell cancer can spread to the deeper levels of the skin and occasionally to the lymph nodes.

Other rarer types of skin cancer include merkel cell carcinoma, Kaposi’s sarcoma, and sarcoma.
