What are carbohydrates?

Answer:
Carbohydrates are one of the body's main
energy sources that it receives from certain types of food. There are two basic kinds of carbohydrates, simple carbohydrates like the ones found in fruit and anything containing refined sugar, and
complex carbohydrates found in plant based foods.

Complex carbs, which are commonly found in bread, pasta, vegetables, or rice, typically take longer for the body to digest.

Once these types of food are ingested, the body converts the carbohydrates into glucose which provides energy for physical activity.  When too much glucose is produced, it is stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen.  The glycogen is stored for use when the body needs more energy.
