What is Folic Acid?

Answer:
Folic acid is one of the B vitamins (B9).
It is one of the water soluble vitamins and, therefore, cannot be stored in the body.  Any excess B9 leaves the body through urination or sweat.

B9, B12, and vitamin C work together to create, break down, and use protein.  B9 also helps the body produce red blood cells as well as DNA.  Supplementing with Folic acid during pregnancy can help prevent certain birth defects.

Some foods containing Folic acid are:

Poultry
Liver
Sprouts
Whole wheat bread
Dark green, leafy vegetables
Beans and peas
Oranges and grapefruits
Fortified breakfast cereals

A Folic acid supplement can also help with a deficiency.  Also, a B vitamin complex can be taken or a standard multi-vitamin.
