What is Metabolism?

Answer:
The body breaks down the food that we eat into proteins,
fats, and sugars.  The body then uses these nutrients for energy and repair in order to sustain life.

The amount of energy required to perform the task of breaking down food is called a calorie.  The rate at which our bodies burn calories is known as our metabolism.

Muscle is the most active tissue in the body and requires a higher level of energy for this reason.  Therefore, people with more muscle mass tend to have a higher metabolism.  In fact, it is easier to burn fat by building muscle than it is by doing aerobics.  By building muscle, the metabolism will increase as a result, and the body will burn fat continually.
