What is a good Oblique workout?

Answer:
The obliques are are the area of the abdominals
that most out of shape people refer to as their love handles.  They are the sides of the abdominals along and below the ribcage.

Having strong obliques is not only beneficial when you have your shirt off (like I'm doing right now), but they help support the torso and take away stress from the lower back.

There are a couple of good floor exercises that work well for the obliques.

Crossover crunches-  From the standard crunch position on the floor, crunch one elbow toward the opposite knee.  Perform an entire set to one side, take a break, and then do the other.

Side crunches- This is a crunch done while lying on your side.  Just lie on your side and crunch the elbow of the arm that is off of the floor toward the hip on the same side.

There is a great standing exercise that I feel is the best oblique exercise.

Standing dumbbell side bends- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and a dumbbell hanging in one hand.  Under control, bend toward the weight, allowing the dumbbell to drop toward the side of the knee.  Once you have gotten fairly close to the knee, come back to the erect position under control.  After a set of between 10 to 20 do the other side.

The obliques aren't a muscle group that get much direct work, so these exercises will make them pretty sore at first.  Stick with them and you'll have a good set of obliques that will benefit you in more ways than one.
