What is a good workout for Runners?

Answer:
Runners tend to workout a lot as it is.
So, the key is to find exercises, other than just running their normal distance, that will enable them to improve their ability to cover that distance in a shorter period of time.

Once that happens the runner can increase their distance and begin working to improve that time.

Because running is such an endurance based activity, I find that it is good to mix in some strength training, especially for the legs.  Doing squats, leg presses, and leg curls will make you legs stronger, therefore making it easier for them to carry you the distance that you are running.  Keep the reps on the high side.  Staying in the 15 to 25 rep range will add a level of endurance to your training.

I also like runners to do drills that will improve their "kick".  This means incorporating some sprints and other running variations to their training.  On a running track, I like to have them sprint the straight-aways and jog the curves for about two miles.  I also like to do a variation where the runner kicks their self in the butt as the sprint.  Doing a few of these for a hundred yards will get your legs use to "kicking".  This will enhance your forward movement with each stride.

Taking steps to get away from just "running" and adding in various strength and quickness techniques to your training will go a long way to improving your overall running ability.
