What is a sprain?

Answer:
When an athlete injures the tissue that connects two
or more bones at a joint, a ligament, he or she has a sprain. Sprains typically occur in the ankle.  This is especially true in athletes due to
the high-impact that many athletic activities require.

However, sprains can occur in any joint that receives some type of trauma.  For instance, if a person falls and stops them self with their hand, he or she can sprain the wrist.

When ankle sprains occur, the ligament is hyper extended and becomes partially or completely torn. This will cause pain, swelling, bruising, and immobility in the effected area.  Often the person will here a pop or tear when the sprain occurs.  In the event of a sprain, apply ice for fifteen to twenty minutes and consult your doctor.
