What is the Gluteus Maximus or Glutes?

Answer:
There are three muscles that make up the gluteal group,
which in simple terms, is your butt.  Of these three muscles, the gluteus maximus is the largest and closest to the surface.

For this reason, the gluteus maximus contributes the most to the shape of the buttocks.  The gluteus maximus is one of the main muscles used in sports and lower body exercises.

The main action of the gluteus maximus is to bring the torso to an erect position after bending at the hips or squatting.  The glutes get a great deal of work from compound leg exercises such as squats and stiff legged dead lifts.  They are also used to a great extent in sprinting, stair climbing, and any sports requiring quick running,
stopping, and cutting.
