What is hypertension?

Answer:
Hypertension is the standard medical term for
high blood pressure.  Hypertension exists if a persons blood pressure reading is consistently over 140/90.  Hypertension can lead to kidney disease, heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke. To be considered hypertension, the reading
must be consistent (six or more months) rather than a sporadic reading.

The danger in having hypertension is the fact that the heart work harder to pump the blood through the body.  It is also contributing factor in the development of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.  Some of the things that contribute to hypertension are genetics, smoking, stress, excess salt in the diet, excess alcohol consumption, obesity, old age, and lack of physical activity.
