What is osteoporosis?

Answer:
Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones
become abnormally small and weak due to a decrease in bone density.  A patient with osteoporosis is at a higher risk
for bone fractures.

There are two types of osteoporosis.  Type I is caused by a estrogen deficiency in post-menopausal women.  Type II comes from aging, and a lack of calcium over time, and can occur in both men and women, but is more common in women.

It is important to effectively treat the condition in order to avoid pathologic fractures.  Some of the treatments for osteoporosis are weight bearing exercises, nutritional supplementation with calcium, medications, and hormonal replacement therapy.
