Lorazepam is a benzodiazepine class drug Lorazepam is a fast-acting drug with one of the highest risks of dependency of any of the benzodiazepine drugs. It has strong sedative effects and is therefor used as a premedication during surgery or dental procedures to reduce the amount of anaesthesia required. Lorazepam can be given orally or intravenously. If given intravenously, it can also terminate seizures through its anticonvulsant properties. Side effects of Lorazepam are dependent on dosage, with higher dosages producing stronger side effects. Side effects include sedation, dizziness, weakness, and unsteadiness, with the sedation and unsteadiness increasing with age. Lorazepam is a Schedule IV Controlled Substance under the United States Controlled Substance Act. Women who are pregnant, nursing, or may become pregnant should not take Lorazepam.
