What is Metronidazole?

Answer:
Metronidazole is used in the treatment of infections caused by bacteria and protozoa.

Metronidazole is marketed by Pfizer in the United States
under the trade name Flagyl, while it is marketed under the same name in the rest of the world by Sanofi-Aventis.  It is used in gel form as preparation for the treatment of dermatological conditions such as rosacea.

Metronidazole is not recommended for women who are pregnant, nursing, or may become pregnant.  If taken before 32 weeks of pregnancy, it significantly increases the risk of preterm birth.

It is also highly recommended that people taking Metronidazole do not drink alcohol, as this may cause serious adverse reactions.
