What is diabetes?

Answer:
Diabetes, a chronic disease that affects as
many as 15 million in the United States, is a condition in which people can’t to use the glucose in their food for energy.

This unused glucose accumulates in the bloodstream.  This glucose can then damage the eyes, heart, kidneys, and nerves. A diabetic can develop devastating complications if treatment isn’t sought. Diabetes has grown to an epidemic proportion in the United States and is one of the leading causes of death and disability.

There is no cure for diabetes, but it is treatable.  With proper, self-managed care, a diabetic can lead a normal life.  Early detection of the condition, and early treatment, can prevent many, if not all, of the complications caused by diabetes.
