What is insulin?

Answer:
Insulin is created by the Beta cells inside the pancreas.  The pancreas is located behind the stomach and performs many functions as well as producing insulin.

Beta cells release insulin with each meal to help the body manage the blood glucose derived from the food.

In the case of someone with Type 1 diabetes,
the pancreas is no longer able to create insulin.  People with Type 2 diabetes can still create insulin, however, their systems do not react well to it.  Type 2 diabetes patients often take diabetes pills or insulin shots in order for their bodies to manage the blood glucose.
