How can I Lower My Cholesterol?

Answer:
Cholesterol is a fatty, wax like substance that
is essential for your cell membranes, nerves, and certain hormones.  It is essential to the production of bile, which helps in the digestion process.

The bad side is that if cholesterol builds up in your arteries it can cause plaque to form. This can cause a heart attack or stroke.

A high level of HDL, or good cholesterol has been found to protect against a heart attack. While having a low level of HDL puts a person at a greater risk. There are several causes for low HDL.  Being overweight, smoking, and not getting enough exercise are among these causes.

An elevated level of LDL, also known as bad cholesterol, will cause a build-up along the walls of the arteries.  This makes it more difficult to deliver blood to the heart and brain.  This condition greatly increases the possibility of a heart attack.

Most people can lower their cholesterol by eating a diet low in saturated fats. If you smoke, quit.  This will not only lower your cholesterol, but better your overall health.  Make sure to read the labels of the food you eat, and try for foods low in fat.  Drink milk that is no more than 2% fat.  When it comes to eggs, eat no more than two a week with the yoke, or just eat the egg whites.  Use margarine rather than butter.

A diet with a lot of fruits and vegetables.  Use a low-fat salad dressing when eating salads.  Instead of frying your meats, boil or grill them.  This will help in removing the fat.  When using cooking oils make sure that they are either Canola or Olive oil.

Be sure to check with your doctor as to the best path for you to lower your cholesterol.  People that are genetically predisposed to having high cholesterol may need to take a cholesterol lowering drug.  However, a little attention to diet and exercise can go a long way to getting into shape and lowering cholesterol.
