What are Amino Acids?

Amino acids are the substances which make up
proteins. Amino acids are organic molecules made of hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen, which combine to make proteins that are vital for the life of many organisms.


There are twenty different types of amino acids, and these different types determine what shape the protein will be. Amino acids are necessary for human life and growth. There are ten essential amino acids – acids that the human body is not able to synthesize, and must be obtained from food. These essential amino acids are histidine, arginine, lysine, leucine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, valine, threonine, and methionine.
