Will my insurance pay for LASIK eye surgery?

Answer:
It used to be the case that insurance companies
regarded LASIK eye surgery as a cosmetic procedure and as such would not include the cost of surgery in their cover.

However, there is an increasing number of instances where refractive eye surgery -- surgery that’s needed to correct vision and eliminate the need for contacts or glasses -- such as LASIK is being determined a medical necessity and therefore payable by the insurance provider. For example, if an individual’s profession prevents him from wearing glasses (e.g. policeman or firefighter), and he’s intolerant to contact lenses, then LASIK surgery could be seen to be a medical necessity.
