What are Vitamins?

Answer:
Vitamins play a vital role in our growth and
development. There are 13 vitamins that our body needs: vitamins A, C, D, E, K, and the B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and folate).

Apart from vitamin K which is formed by intestinal bacteria, and vitamin D which is produced in the skin by the action of sunlight, all vitamins have to be obtained from our diet. Vitamins fall into two categories: water-soluble vitamins have to be dissolved in water before the body can absorb them (and as such can’t be stored by the body), and fat-soluble vitamins are dissolved in fat and can be stored by the body.

Vitamins are substances which, in small amounts, are necessary to sustain life. They must be obtained from food as they are either not made in the body at all, or are not made in sufficient quantities for growth, vitality and well-being. A deficiency of a particular vitamin causes disease symptoms which can only be cured by that vitamin.
