What is Selenium?

Selenium is a natural chemical element, and
is labeled with atomic number 34.  Selenium is frequently found in sulfide ores, and is an important component for cellular functionality in animals.


Although selenium is poisonous to animals (including humans) in large quantities; in the proper amounts it plays an important role in keeping cells working properly.

Selenium is available from such foods
as fish, eggs, nuts, meat, and cereal; as well as crab and lobster, among others.

Selenium deficiencies are sometimes found in people who live in areas where the mineral is lacking in the soils where local crops are grown.   Certain areas of  China have selenium deficient soil.

Selenium is considered a semi-metallic element
, and some forms of selenium are excellent conductors of light; making it useful in certain photography processes and products.

Selenium is also used in some industrial processes; such as making glass, brass, and vulcanized rubber.  Selenium also acts as a catalyst in a variety of chemical and laboratory tests and procedures.
