What is St. John's wort?

Answer:
For centuries St. John’s wort has been used to treat nerve pain and mental disorders.

Since long ago, herbalists have written about the use of St. John’s wort as an effective sedative and a treatment for malaria.   It has also been used as a balm for wounds, burns, and insect bites.

More recently, St. John’s wort has been used to combat depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders.  Often, a tea is prepared from the flowering tops of St. John’s wort.  Also, the concentrated extracts are turned into tablets to be taken orally.

In some cases, an increased sensitivity to sunlight can be a side effect of St. John’s wort. Other side effects can include anxiety, fatigue, sexual dysfunction, gastrointestinal symptoms, headache, or dizziness.
