What is vitamin D?

Answer:
Vitamin D is a collection of fat-soluble prohormones.
The two major forms of vitamin D are vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol).

Vitamin D3 is produced in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight's ultraviolet B radiation.

Another important function that vitamin D contributes to is the  maintaining organ systems.  Vitamin D helps to promote the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the intestines, as well as contributing to the re-absorption of calcium by the kidneys.

Vitamin D is also essential to the formation of a strong skeleton by promoting mineralization and bone formation.  Vitamin D also works to inhibit parathyroid hormone secretion from the parathyroid gland, as well as promoting phagocytosis, immunosuppression and anti-tumor activity.
