What is Vitamin E?

Answer:
Vitamin E is an antioxidant that works
to protect the cells in our body from the damaging effects of free radicals. Free radicals result from our normal metabolism as well as from exposure to the environment such as ultraviolet light, pollution, and cigarette smoke.

Free radicals cause damage to the membranes of the cells.  They also damage protein and DNA and can contribute to heart disease and cancer.

There are two main groups of vitamin E, tocopherols and tocotrienols, each containing four isomers. The alpha-tocopherol isomer is the only form that our body can use. Our bodies absorb natural forms of alpha-tocopherol more efficiently.  However, the body can also absorb synthetic form of the vitamin.
