What are the Pectorals?

Answer:
The Pectoralis major, pectorals or pecs,
are the large, thick muscles of the front of the upper torso.  The pectorals are a relatively easy muscle to develop because they are involved in so many exercises.

The pectorals are often a major target in bodybuilding, as well as recreational weight training.  This is largely due to the fact that they are a "show" muscle, or a "mirror" muscle.  When you look at your physiques in the mirror (I say you because I would never be so narcissistic), the pecs are the predominant muscle in view. For this reason people tend to target the pecs so that they can look good in the mirror.

The pectorals are often over trained do to the fact that so many of the exercises that target the pecs are very popular in gyms.  Push ups, bench press, incline press, dips, and flyes all work the pecs.  People tend to train with all of these exercises, rather than being selective, and choosing one or two to perform.

It has long been believed that one could develop the upper chest and lower chest separately, by doing either incline, or flat bench press..  But more recently, it has been discovered that the development is more a matter of genetics, and not a function of technique.
