What does a Spotter do?

Answer:
A spotter is someone who assist someone
with their set while training with weights.  The spotter is there to help the lifter if they need help completing a set or to help get the weight off of the lifter if they get stuck.

Often people will workout with a training partner and the two will act as spotters for each other.  If a person is training by themselves, it is usually pretty easy to get someone else in the gym to come over and give you a spot.

There are different spotting techniques for different lifts.  In bench press, the spotter simply stands at the head of the lifter and assists from there.  For curls, one stands in front of the lifter.  In squats, the spotter practically hugs the lifter from behind while spotting.

In extremely heavy, Olympic style lifting, there may be two or three spotter necessary to insure safety.
