What is a barbell?

Answer:
No, this isn't that goofy bell they ring up at
the local pub when something "zany", like twenty-five cent shots, is going on.  A barbell is something else that you find over in...

the smelly, sticky, and noisy side of the health club.  A barbell typically consists of a seven foot Olympic style bar, which weighs forty-five pounds, combined with Olympic plates.  Olympic plates have a large, two inch diameter hole in the center.  This allows them to slide over the two inch bushings on the end of the bar.

These things combined make up a barbell.  A set of barbells are very versatile.  Barbells are used in bench pressing, squats, dead lifts, military press, clean and jerk, curls, and just about anything your imagination can come up with.
