What is a deltoid?

Answer:
The deltoids are a muscle group consisting of
three muscle heads to form the rounded, muscular region of the shoulder.  The deltoids consist of the anterior, middle, and posterior heads, or the front, middle, and rear respectively.  The origin of
the term deltoids refers to the letter in the Greek alphabet, delta, or triangle as the deltoids resemble an upside down triangle.

The anterior deltoid is mostly active when the arm is raised out in front.  It is also very active in any pressing movement or dip.  The motion that involves the middle deltoid the most is a lateral raise, or when the arm is raised out to the side of the body.  The rear deltoid is active in most pulling motions such as cable or barbell rows.
