What is a good workout for Football Players?

Answer:
Aside from the obvious special skills needed to play
football, it is essential to have the right combination of strength, agility, speed, and endurance.

Because of this, football players engage in a very intense and specialized training regimen.

Not every position requires the same combination of skills.  Linemen require more strength than any other players.  In most cases they weigh close to, or over three hundred pounds, and are usually pushing around someone of the same weight.  Their workouts are going to consist of a lot of "quick-burst" training.  Squats and power cleans will help with their power on the blocking sled, as well as driving an opponent off of the ball.

Skill positions, such as quarterback, running back, linebacker, and wide receiver require more speed and agility than lineman.  A great deal of strength is still required, but that isn't the main focus of their training.  They are going to employ a more full body approach to their training rather than focusing on just power movements.  As with every position in football, speed and quickness are essential.  However, this is even more true for skill position players.  More sprinting and cutting work is going to be employed.

A good example of a full body workout that is based on power would be:

Dead Lifts

Power Cleans

Squats

Bench Press

Overhead Press

A full body routine that combines power and smaller muscle work would be as follows:

Dead Lifts

Power Cleans

Squats

Bench Press

Overhead Press

Lateral Raise

Rows

Pull Downs

Triceps Press downs

Curls
