What is a leg press?

Answer:
A leg press can refer to a particular weight
lifting machine, or the performance of the exercise, as in, "Now I'm going to go over and leg press on the leg press."

The actual performance of the leg press is much like a squat, but without the weight and pressure on your shoulders and back.  It is primarily an exercise for the quadriceps.  A trainee can decide how deep they want to go, but on a machine lift like this, the deeper the better.

Most leg press machines have the trainee lying on their back at about a forty-five degree slant and pressing the weight up, at a forty five degree angle.  These machines are typically plate loaded.  However, I have come across a few horizontal pressing machines that incorporate cables and a weight stack with a selector pin.  The best machines are built by Hammer Strength, Lifefitness, and Nautilus.

The leg press is a very safe and effective exercise.  If you have access to a good leg press machine, be sure to incorporate is as part of your regimen.
