What is a Bench Press?

Answer:
The bench press is a weight lifting exercise
performed on a bench in which the trainee lies flat on their back and lowers a barbell to their chest and then presses it back up.  Good form is important for
a productive and safe bench press.

If form is neglected, it can result on any number of injuries to the pectorals, shoulders, or elbows.  The best form to use is one in which the shoulder blades are pinch together, the heels are tucked back under the hips, and there is a slight arch in the back.  The shoulder blades and buttocks should be the only parts of the body touching the bench.  The barbell should be lowered slowly until it touches just above the abdomen.  After a slight pause, the weight is then pushed back to the starting position.

The current world record for bench press is 1010 lbs. by Gene Rychlak.
