What is the failure point?

Answer:
Failure, in weight training, is the point at
which another repetition is impossible no matter how hard you try.  If you do a set of bench press, and on the last rep, you are not able to press the weight off of your chest, you have trained to the point of failure.

Training to failure is an important principle in High Intensity Training, or HIT.  Training to failure insures that you have used the muscles last reserves of strength and energy.  This allows the growth mechanism in the body to kick in.  Once the body has recovered, you should be able to lift more.  The muscles must now adapt to the new point of failure and can increase their ability to lift.
